Take time to get the fit right

A properly-fitting flange is crucial for both your comfort and your pumping efficiency. Too small can cause pain and restrict milk flow; too large can reduce stimulation and milk production. Many Willow moms use a 17- to 19mm insert, so you might need one too. Measure yourself periodically and anytime you notice consistent discomfort or changes in output when you pump

Align carefully and choose the right bra

A well-fitting bra is critical for mobility, suction, and output if you’re using a wearable pump. The fit should be snug without being restricting, and have a bit of stretch for movement. Choose a full-coverage bra with a nursing flap that supports your pump at the top and bottom.  Kindred Bravely's  are faves among Willow moms for being stretchy, cozy, and supportive.

    Give your breasts a little TLC

    Moisturize and soothe your skin regularly. Pumping and direct breastfeeding involve touching and tugging on sensitive areas. Your breasts and nipples might need a little TLC! It can help to optimize your pumping routine and address sore nipples quickly. Plus, a little lubrication on your nipples can reduce chafing while improving the seal. 

    Heat and vibration can help relieve the symptoms of a variety of issues. It’s actually possible to prevent and/or get relief from some of the most common breast conditions—including engorgement, plugged ducts, and mastitis—using heat, massage, and showers.

    Clean and air out your breasts when you can. Tight garments can constrict milk ducts and help bacteria thrive on your skin, so go braless or even topless when possible, and regularly wash your nursing bras and tanks with a gentle detergent that works for you.
