Maximize your pumping output

If you’re new to wearable pumps, it can take a little time to adjust to the different stimuli to get the output you want. Follow these tips to get the most out of your pumping sessions.

Take time to get it right

Use a well-fitted flange. A majority of women measure smaller than standard flange sizes and could benefit from inserts. A flange that is too large reduces suction strength, which can leave milk in the breast and drop supply. Because the Willow 360 uses continuous suction, it’s especially important to get the right fit.

  • Willow inserts are available in five sizes (13mm, 15mm, 17mm, 19mm, 21mm)
  • Book a free virtual session with a Willow Mom Coach to discuss pump sizing, tips on maximizing comfort and milk output, and more.

Double check your pump assembly. For Willow Go, an easy mistake to make is placing the diaphragm incorrectly. This can reduce suction strength, and once again your supply can take a hit. You know you’ve placed it correctly if you hear a pop when you press it into the pump. Our Willow Go Assembly & Disassembly guide helps you learn this process.

Try to be patient as your breasts adapt. You might not get as much milk as you expect at first, but we’ve learned from thousands of Willow moms that if you keep pumping for at least 10 sessions, that’s typically enough time to train your body to pump comfortably and effectively.

Learn the basics of supply and pumping
Exclusively breastfeed on demand in the first four weeks if you can. This will stimulate your supply as your baby’s suckling triggers production. (Pumping can establish your supply in certain cases, like if your baby is in the NICU.)

Use your pump for flexibility and support. Wearables give you the freedom of mobility, but you’ll want to be sure your flange fits and your nipple is aligned for optimal suction. Aim for multiple letdowns to remove more milk and keep your supply strong, and store your milk safely.

Take care of your breasts

Your breasts might need a little TLC during this time! We love the LaVie Warming Lactation Massager for improving comfort and output and CoBoo’s Natural Pumping Spray is hypoallergenic, vegan, and safe for baby

Choose a stretchy and snug bra

If your bra is too loose, you won’t have great suction — or great output! Kindred Bravely's  are faves among Willow moms for being stretchy, cozy, and supportive.

Take extra care to get the suction level right

While your baby’s latch is crucial for comfortable and effective breastfeeding, suction is key with pumping. If suction is too high, it can be painful and train your body to require stronger stimulation, while too low can leave milk behind.
